Mystery in Old Sacramento

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I took some photos in Old Sacramento over the holiday weekend and stumbled upon something I’d never seen before (despite having been billions of times – well, numerous times). Of course now I can’t remember which street it’s on, but right off one of the walkways there is a white arch and steps that lead down into a courtyard of sorts. In the courtyard are five or six (plaster?) columns and the crumbled ruins of a couple more. Does anyone know what used to be in this spot? (see pic below)

Sounds like a good research project.

Don’t you love to stumble across little passageways and magical spots that are hidden in plain view? Especially when the sun is setting and the air is crisp. All of you should take a few minutes this week, find this spot, stand among the columns, and make a holiday wish. I guarantee it will put a smile on your face.

Here it is:

Local food blogs

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Since it is almost Thanksgiving, let’s take a moment to discuss food. If you like to eat food, think about food, and make food… you probably like to read about food. Here are some local Sacramento food bloggers who are currently making us drool on our keyboards.

Simply Recipes
You may not know this but Elise’s blog was named one of Time magazine’s top 50 coolest websites of 2006. The basic premise is this: she tries out different recipes, takes gorgeous photos of the finished product, shares only the best findings with her readers, and then presumably digs in. It’s a simple concept that works. Plus she brings her parents in to share in some of the cooking and I think that’s sweet.

Vanilla Garlic
Lovely blog about “culinary adventures” in Sacramento. Garrett is a grad school student (and I suspect that he might be studying photography because his pictures are almost as delicious as the food he describes.) who somehow finds the time to write restaurant reviews, document funny conversations about carrots growing on trees, and bake cupcakes.

He She Chew Chew
There is just something charming about this site run by Mark and Brandy. I like the bright unfussy layout and the way each post is labeled either He or She depending on who wrote it. They talk about food, agriculture, and related stuff but they don’t post often enough for my liking (I can relate).

Architecture of Sacramento Walking Tour

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Several years ago the Sacramento Heritage folks put out a handy pamphlet called the Architecture of Sacramento Walking Tour. They are no longer publishing it, unfortunately. I had heard about the guide at the last Preservation Roundtable meeting but had not seen it until a recent visit to the Sacramento Room at the downtown library. I don’t think they would mind if I made a very poorly reproduced copy available to you as a Word document.

Some of the houses on the tour are also featured on Sacramento Historic House.

Gwyneth’s good taste

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

This month’s House & Garden features the Hamptons home of Gwyneth Paltrow. The décor is lovely although not something I can imagine living in without wondering if I was in fact not “cool” enough for said décor. Here is one of the drool worthy pieces:

The amazing Blossom Chandelier by Tord Boontje would look equally at home in a modern penthouse or a historic Victorian. I love its winsome charm and delicate beauty. Don’t forget to check out Tord’s beautiful website which uses Flash in a way that’s artistic and not super annoying.

While we are on the subject of pretty things… I’m currently enamored with the embroidered pillows from Chelsea Textiles.

Weather or not…

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

(I hadn’t really planned on talking about the homes that were destroyed by fire on 24th and Q as I’m far from an expert in these matters, but I did want to point you toward Kay’s post from last week about fire prevention.)

Right. Now, is it just me or is it still… Summer?

I’m trying to look on the bright side (no pun intended). I mean we’ve done all of the wonderful Fall-type things. The lovely day trip to Apple hill to sample exotic varieties of apples and devour apple doughnuts. Swept leaves. Made an apple crisp. Put out Halloween decorations. Ate all of the Halloween candy after no kids came to our door. Went for a Fall colors walk. Had soup as a main course for dinner. Made spiced cider…

All while wearing short sleeves and cranking the air-conditioning.

Every day I scan the skies for a few gray clouds and cooler temperatures… anxious for the moment when I can finally drag out the knit scarves, the cute cardigans, the tights, the candles, the too sugary coffee drinks, and the casseroles. You know… embrace the cozy!

I guess the good news about this warm weather is that we can still wakeboard (if we had any idea what that was).

French Fever at Le Petite Paris

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

I finally had a chance to browse through the midtown jewel box of a shop Le Petite Paris this past weekend. I say browse as I could maybe afford to buy a postcard but that’s about it. Owner Nicole has taken great care in selecting unique items for her store, including a large section of fashionable kid’s clothes. She also hosts shopping trips to Paris which she chats about and shares lovely photographs of on her blog.

Some of my favorite French inspired pleasures:

Local Food:
La Bonne Soupe (920 8th St.) for French Onion soup or a Fig and Goat Cheese sandwich
Café Rolle for Croque Monsieur and a glass of wine

Books:
Joie de Vivre: Simple French Style for Everyday Living by Robert Arbor
Entre Nous: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl by Debra Ollivier

Films:
Amelie(oui bien sur!)
Paris, Je T’Aime
American Dreamer
… apologies to the Truffaut, Godard, and Jean Renoir fans out there.
