Heads will roll

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Okay it wouldn’t be Halloween at Sac Historic House without mentioning the house on H Street in Boulevard Park. You know the one – empty for years, full of furniture, no-one ever seen going in or out, creepy lion head over porch, etc… I’ve heard it called the Hart mansion or the Martinez house but I’m not sure which is correct. I’m not going to show any pictures or give the address as I would hate to bring any bad mojo down on myself but you can read all about it here.

Owning a house with history means not only do you have to worry about hundred year old plumbing and fire hazard wiring, but also pesky past residents sticking around to keep you up at night. Especially after you’ve watched an episode of Torchwood and eaten a few slices of pizza (is it the cheese or the green peppers that does it?).

Luckily, This Old House magazine has a few tips for dealing with your otherworldly occupants – although short of moving (not in this housing market), you and the spirits will probably have to learn to live together.

Happy Halloween everyone.

SacRentals photo fun

Friday, October 26th, 2007

How much do I love to waste time browsing through the photos on SacRentals?  Too much.  Much too much.  They’ve got a pretty good photographer and stylist which make the pictures so inviting.  Plus it’s a rare peek inside some of these homes.  Maybe they will let me tag along one day and get some shots for sachistorichouse.com.

Witches love Victorians

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Well since Halloween is approaching (and I’ve already undermined my academic authority by talking about magic cottages), why not throw caution to the wind and mention witches. Now my idea of witches comes from reading books as a kid such as Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth and Dorrie the little witch but who wouldn’t love to be a witch if you could live in a house like this:

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman certainly agreed when they signed on to star in the film Practical Magic (1998). The elaborate Victorian that served as their home in the movie was actually a shell constructed on Washington’s San Juan Island and the interiors were shot on wonderfully crafted sets in Los Angeles.

For more about the production design or just more about the film check out the lovely fan site Amas Veritas or the official Warner Brothers site here (which is old school web at its best!).

The magic cottage

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Going a bit off-topic now for some Sunday morning witterings…

I first saw the words magic and cottage put together while reading about SARK’s home in her book Inspiration Sandwich. Then a few years later, I came across it on Keri Smith’s site in reference to her home. And I’m sure it’s used to describe at least ten Thomas Kinkade paintings (don’t get me started)…

So what is a magic cottage? Well my guess is that the cottage has to be small and cozy… a place suited for book readers, writers, artists, and world travelers. A place where you can see everything you own in a matter of minutes. Something hobbit-esque that is reminiscent of those blanket and chair forts you used to make as a kid. (nerd alert)

What makes it magic is a bit harder to describe… sort of like the Supreme Court’s definition of porn – I know it when I see it. Usually there is an element of architectural whimsy and a Western European influence in the style but this is not always the case.

Keep an eye out for magic cottages in Sacramento as you go about your day. If you see one worth mentioning, feel free to email me at web “at” sachistorichouse “dot” com. I think there will be quite a few readers of this blog today as I’ve managed to crowbar in the words hobbit, fort, and porn into one post. Yes!

Fall walk in Midtown

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Now that Fall is here and the late afternoon sun is at its most flattering for historic house spotting, let me share with you one of my favorite Midtown strolls. Take a cup of cocoa and park anywhere along 22nd Street near the McClatchy Library at 2112. Just start wandering around the couple of blocks between T and V on 22nd and 21st. The neighborhood of “Poverty Ridge” is a house lover’s dream. Some highlights are the Italianate style John Stevens house at 2110 T St. as well as the charming Victorian gingerbread at 2131, the former home of Joan Didion at 2000 22nd, and the show-stopping (and slightly unnerving, maybe it’s the palm trees?) mansion at 1931 21st.

After a slow stroll I like to relax in the sun room of the Library, where book bargains abound and if I sit there long enough undisturbed, I begin to feel transported back to a time when sun rooms were de rigueur.

Path of least resistance

Thanks for joining me… the manual blog was getting a bit unwieldy so here we are with WordPress.  I’ve decided against comments for the time being but that might change in the future.  As always you can reach me at… web “at” sachistorichouse “dot” com (spelled out to avoid spammers).

22nd Street Victorian

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I found an interesting archive photo of some Sacramento actors sitting on a 22nd Street Victorian porch circa 1907. The photo poses more questions than answers but sometimes that’s half the fun. Go to the Midtown section for more details.

Julia Morgan house tour

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I want to send a big thank you to Jessica at CSUS for giving me a private tour (and photo session) of Julia Morgan house today. As this was my first time in the mansion, I was surprised by its hominess (you know how some historic houses can have that museum/mausoleum look?) and its overall charm. The house has been closed to events since January 2007 and there doesn’t seem to be a date set for re-opening. The closure is apparently due to maintenance on the house and grounds, but there is only speculation as to what changes/improvements will be made.

Some neat things to see if you ever take a tour… the hidden, sliding screen for the front door (as demonstrated by Jessica).

The secret servant’s passageway connecting the kitchen to the lower foyer is very Remains Of The Day. And the jack and jill bathroom upstairs is quite pretty.

The little sunroom with the full sized mirror and a view of the garden is perfect for a bride to be.

update…

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I’ve gotten the official word back from Lisa Rogers, University Enterprises concierge (fancy – who knew?) regarding the Julia Morgan house. She said “The house is treasured by the university and will be used for events in the future…” So while I didn’t find out why they are taking a break from hosting events, I did discover that you can still arrange a historical tour of the house and gardens – by appointment only. Photography is allowed. Contact Jessica at (916) 278-2647 for more info.
