Monday, December 14th, 2009The Ramen Girl
Saturday, October 24th, 2009I watched The Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy recently on Netflix Instant. I don’t know if it’s actually good or I was just willing to like anything at the time. If you can just take it for what it is and not delve too deeply into the stereotypes, it’s definitely worth a look. For me it feeds the fantasy of living in another country (not done) and dating someone from another country (done). Don’t watch this entire trailer as it gives too much away, but if you watch half of it, you’ll get the general idea.

Men Take Note: Chicks Dig HBO’s Band of Brothers
Sunday, June 21st, 2009
Perhaps something to do with a uniformed Damian Lewis? Photo copyright HBO.
One movie/mini-series that I cannot turn off if I happen across it on tv is Band of Brothers. I’ve seen it about 4 times now. My husband probably wonders why it is I can sit through hours upon hours of BoB and not even five minutes of his favorite war film of all time Where Eagles Dare
.
I don’t know. They just got me. Them being Mssrs. Spielberg and Hanks. With their English actors doing awesome American accents and their American actors doing awesome American accents, their interviews with the real life members of Easy Company, their outstanding storytelling, their pull-no-punches Bastogne episode… oh I get so nerdy for Band of Brothers. { yep, got the soundtrack }
Since today is Father’s Day, the History channel has being doing a BoB marathon and I’ve been watching. Glued to the sofa instead of doing laundry or going to the grocery store or experiencing sunlight…
Hope you had a good day too!
You’ve Got Mail – Meg’s Apartment
Thursday, June 4th, 2009
Awhile back, I mentioned the top 10 movie interiors that made me sit up and take notice. One of them is Meg Ryan’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail. There’s just something about that apartment. Maybe it’s because the movie makes you feel good and therefore seeing the heroine’s living space is merely an extension of those feelings. I don’t know. I just like it. I like the white and sunny yellows, the perky florals, the shelves crammed with books, the old piano, the light and let’s face it… the semi-virginal promise of youth. I mean come on – it really is a bit girly girl.
I’m including some screenshots to jog your memory. Hooked On Houses does a much better job at film interiors, but she hasn’t done this one yet (as far as I know). Enjoy!

Preserve Me A Seat – West Sac Showing
Sunday, February 8th, 2009
Did you know there is a place that shows classic and independent movies on the big screen in West Sac? Neither did I. These cool film screenings take place in the old ILWU labor union hall on F Street (on the other side of the river). Movies run Fridays at 7 or 9:30 p.m. (check the schedule) and admission is just $5, unless otherwise noted. You can view their upcoming calendar here.
Two future films that caught my eye:
His Girl Friday – What better way to start Valentine’s weekend than with this fast-talking, screwball comedy from director Howard Hawks. This is the film that current directors always require their leads to watch in order to perfect that comic timing and chemistry. (7 p.m., Friday Feb 13)
Preserve Me A Seat – Local historian William Burg will be introducing this documentary about saving our beautiful, historic movie palaces. The movie also delves into issues that face modern cities such as finding new uses for historic structures or on the flip side, tearing down old buildings to put up things like high-end lofts or apartments. This film is presented in partnership with the Sacramento Old City Association. (check listing for time, Friday March 20)
See you at the movies!

“I’ve no regrets. I’ve been everywhere and done everything. I’ve eaten caviar at Cannes, sausage rolls at the dogs. I’ve played baccarat at Biarritz and darts with the rural dean. What is there left for me but marriage?”
~Iris Henderson in The Lady Vanishes (1938)
As we approach Thanksgiving and the end of November, I’m curious as to how you are doing with your goals for this year. Are you thankful that you finally asked for a raise or set aside a couple of hours each week to paint or took that dream vacation? Did this past year burn with excitement and possibility or at least flow along with awareness and warmth for yourself and others? I often get inspired by making goal lists (such as Superhero’s Mondo Beyondo list) and books like Write It Down, Make It Happen by Henriette Anne Klauser. It’s too early to talk about making your goal list for 2009, so this post is more like a reminder that 2008 is still going strong.
You’ve got the whole month of December to start a blog, put up an ad on Match, write a song, start an IRA, open an Etsy shop, get a mantra, get off the couch and walk for 30 minutes a day, forgive your last boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/boss/hairdresser/dog/whatever…, or just be grateful for where you are now.
I love the above line from The Lady Vanishes because even though Iris is something of a spoiled socialite, there is a confidence and a “gameness” in her words. She is out there living life to the fullest. And baccarat at Biarritz sounds awfully glamorous and exciting, doesn’t it?
December is coming. Where will you take it?
p.s. Some goals I’m working on for December: walk most days, hand out more House History flyers, cook a nice dinner for my husband, see snow fall, try Mexican hot chocolate, buy or make some handmade gifts, stop freaking out about the economy, take more photos and try to sell one or two, hit up the farmer’s and antique markets, see the Yves Saint Laurent show at the DeYoung, and try to keep my office more tidy.
p.p.s Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Uptown Girls screen capture by me but film copyright held by MGM (2003)
I love Alicia’s post about top movies she watches repeatedly just to see the inside of the character’s house. I have my own list (some of which I’ve spoken about already):
- Amelie
- Uptown Girls (Molly’s apartment)
- Practical Magic
- The Station Agent (I loved Patricia Clarkson’s house)
- Wallace & Gromit (it’s clay but it’s charming!)
- Green Card (on Alicia’s list as well)
- You’ve Got Mail (Meg’s apartment)
- Imagine Me & You (flower shop and all of the apartments)
- Enchanted April
- Any of The Thin Man movies (art deco heaven)
