Sacramento Heritage Walks

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Looks like Sacramento Heritage has a new website featuring a number of self-guided walking tours through historic areas of town.  Some look better than others, but definitely worth checking out.

This reminds me that Sacramento Historic House has been criminally neglected.  I have no excuse.  It needs a redesign and new photos and maybe add in street addresses (which I hesitated to do originally).

Pumpkins!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Most of what I’ve had to say lately has involved bitching about the economy, being “new poor” and wishing it would get cold enough to turn off the air conditioning. And nobody really needs to hear it…

I posted some more photos from our recent trip to England on my Flickr.

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Hey cats and kittens. We are off to England for a holiday. I will be meeting up with a house historian and visiting old buildings during Open House London. So, there will be some interesting things to report upon our return.

Realizations about Google Ads, Tim Ferriss and Safeway

Friday, May 1st, 2009

This week has been one of realizations both grand and meager… well mostly meager. I’ll share, shall I?

Weight Watchers magazine is surprisingly cool – Now granted I’ve only looked at one issue but it was well produced and inspiring. The stock photos are bright and fun. There was even mention of alternative therapies and organic beauty products.

Google Adsense is not working for me – Being forced to look at unwanted advertising is so annoying and I apologize for subjecting you to it. I’ll be taking at look at different approaches to monetizing this site. I like the Art.com ad (to the right) because it’s nice to look at and it’s somewhat related.

Having groceries delivered is awesome – If you can stand a bit of middle-class guilt, then having your groceries delivered is the best service ever. The key here is to let Safeway.com lug all of those boring everyday items like milk and pasta to your kitchen while you enjoy a once a week European-style shop of the farmers market with your Etsy purchased tote bag. It’s more economical than you think!

I wouldn’t want to date The 4 Hour Work Week author Tim Ferriss (much to his relief, I’m sure) however the audio version of his book has helped me through many morning workouts – I am a bit uncomfortable admitting that I did enjoy this book… I’m more of an Eckhart Tolle girl. But my ears do tend to prick up whenever anyone has a strategy for working less and travelling more. If nothing else, it might inspire you to cut out some of your biggest time wasters and increase productivity. Or not.

I suck at selling things on CraigslistOh Happy Day’s Jordan bought a bubble machine off of Craigslist. A bubble machine! Someone had to have posted a bubble machine for sale and she found it and bought it. I can’t even get anyone to take back issues of Domino magazine off my hands. Maybe that’s it. Maybe if I had something as sexy as a bubble machine…

In Which I Am Supermodel For 10 Minutes

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Photo demonstrates windy weather!

Recently I had the pleasure of having my photo taken for Inside Publications. They are doing an article on me and my house history research for the November issue. I thought to myself… right… photoshoot time. So I hauled out my favorite guilty pleasure movie Catwalk (1996) and studied up on life as a supermodel. Okay, easy. Sit around and have people take care of your every need… then stand for a few minutes to get the shot, right?

Well, not exactly. Our photoshoot was outside in the blustering wind, where I stood in the gutter with crazy hair – while a couple of impatient gardeners stood just outside of the shot waiting for us to finish so they could continue blowing dead leaves into the street. Just me and the extremely nice photographer (hi Linda!). No hairstylist, makeup artist, scurrying interns or Veuve Clicquot. So if you see the photo and wonder why I’m not smiling with my eyes or looking “fierce”… now you know.

Naaah, it was great fun. Many thanks to the friendly and funny Julie Foster and Inside Pubs for setting this up. Work it!

Top 10 Tips for Traveling to London

Friday, September 19th, 2008

View of Hyde Park from our hotel on our last visit.

We’re off to England soon for a bit of vacation (and a wee bit of work thrown in).  I compiled this top tip list during my last visit to London and even though it may come across as a bit cranky (which I was at the time), I think the tips work not only for London but for most other places as well.

  1. Pack a raincoat that covers your rear-end and it should have a hood.  Umbrellas are great, but not on the narrow sidewalks of London and God help you if there is any wind.
  2. Know where you are going.  Nothing is more tiring than trudging around crowded streets wondering if they’ve moved the British Museum.  Have a pocket sized A to Z street guide and study it before you leave the hotel.  Have an alternate plan in case the site you want to see is closed.
  3. Take advantage of the public (and free) museum bathrooms.
  4. Don’t booze it up during the day.  You will be too tired to continue sight-seeing and you might get a headache.
  5. Always carry Advil (or equivalent).  Tums are good too.
  6. Use internet cafés.  They will keep you in touch with loved ones back home and are also handy for practical information (e.g. train times, theatre locations, weather predictions, horoscopes, etc…)
  7. Avoid the tube at rush hour.  Even if you have to violate rule #4 and wait out the crowds in a wood paneled pub with a glass of Scotch.
  8. Throw money at the problem.  This is one of my Dad’s favorite travel tips and one that I back one hundred per cent.  But don’t be an ugly American and throw money around when there isn’t a problem.
  9. Drink water.  Take your vitamins.  Don’t neglect yourself.  If it’s time to stop walking… stop walking.  Get a taxi.  See rule #8.
  10. Don’t underestimate the restorative power of a good piece of chocolate.

Sacramento House History Research Rate Change

Charming house I researched this month – it’s for sale too, wish I could afford to buy it!

So if you have a house in the East Sac, Land Park, Midtown or Downtown area and you’re curious as to its history, please email me at web[at]sachistorichouse[dot]com. More info can be found here.

Along those same lines… the Sacramento Old City Association is having their annual home tour on September 21 in the Winn Park Historic District and Capital Mansion areas of Midtown. You don’t want to miss this!

I’m a bit slow in getting it updated, but feel free to have a look around and email any comments or suggestions to td {at} romanticfilmlocations {dot} com. Hope you enjoy it!
